The President’s Notes
Dear Members and Friends of the Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia,
October 15, 2011
Marie Sklodowska Curie is best known as the discoverer of the radioactive
elements polonium (PO) and radium (RA), and as the first person to win two Nobel prizes.
For scientists and the public, her radium was a key to a basic change in our understanding
of matter and energy. Her work not only influenced the development of fundamental science
but also ushered in a new era in medical research and treatment.
In 2011, nations around the globe are commemorating the 100th anniversary
of her Nobel prize in Chemistry.
It is proper that the Polish American community in Philadelphia
join this international celebration. Founded in 1965, our organization
has sought to give prominence to our cultural heritage and endow
Polish traditions with new life in this country. In furtherance of our
mission, we are honored to host an evening devoted to Poland’s most
celebrated woman scientist. Please join us for “A Tribute to Marie
Sklodowska Curie” on Saturday, November 12 beginning at 6 o’clock at Fisher’s
Tudor House in Bensalem. In addition to a delightful sit-down dinner and open
bar, the evening will include a presentation of Madame Curie’s legacy in medicine,
Polish-authored poetry readings, a live music concert and a silent auction.
A commemorative program book provides the opportunity
to support this event with your purchase of an ad or personal
greetings. Please find the order form below. We are also seeking
donations for our silent auction (e.g. jewelry, crystal, china, tickets
for cultural/sports events). All donations will be gratefully acknowledged
in the program booklet. Kindly contact Marie Hejnosz, Silent Auction Coordinator,
if you would like to contribute to the silent auction: (215) 487 – 0221 or
Marie.Hejnosz@uphs.upenn.edu.
Last year, we gathered to commemorate the life of Fryderyk Chopin
on the 200th anniversary of his death. During this “Year of Chemistry”,
let us join together to celebrate the extraordinary accomplishments and
contributions of our beloved countrywoman, Marie Sklodowska Curie.
Please spread the word and plan to join us for this celebration of our
Polish heritage.
I look forward to welcoming you there!
Sincerely,
Teresa N. Wojcik, President
