Jamestown 400 Celebration November 22, 2008

On November 22, 2008, the Polish Heritage Society hosted a Jamestown 400 Celebration. From start to finish, the event was filled with interesting and enjoyable elements. First, two musicians dressed in colonial attire greeted guests with fife and drum music. The sight and sounds of the colonial musicians reminded all that we were commemorating a centuries-old event, the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the first Polish settlers at the Jamestown Colony! Ceremonially, the Officers and Board of the PHS marched into the reception hall along with the music of the fife and drum. After greeting everyone and making opening remarks, President Teresa N. Wojcik invited Mr. Wojciech Lukasiewicz from the Polish Consulate in New York to offer brief comments. Mr. Lukasiewicz spoke of the importance of hosting events such as this to commemorate the contributions of Poles to the American landscape. He offered congratulations to the Polish Heritage Society for its fine work in promoting a positive image of Poland to American society. The evening then proceeded with a delicious meal and dancing to the music of the Denny O Orchestra.
After dinner, Debbie Majka shared information about the commemoration ceremonies held in Jamestown, Virginia by the Polish-American community. Following the talk, Dr. Teresa G. Wojcik presented a slideshow of images from the Jamestown colony as well as a Jamestown exhibit on display at the Pulaski Museum in Warka, Poland. Guests certainly enjoyed this informative and educational portion of our Jamestown 400 Celebration – a truly excellent history lesson!
Throughout the evening, guests had the opportunity to make bids on a wide array of silent auction items, which included jewelry, Polish literature, ceramics, glass figurines, serving trays, Lennox dishes, and Christmas decorations. Silent Auction Coordinator Marie Hejnosz declared the results at the end of the evening as everyone excitedly waited to hear if their bid had been the highest! Sincere thanks are extended to all those who attended the celebration, and donated items for our Silent Auction or the Memory Book.
