PHS Awards Annual Scholarships

The Scholarship Winners with Dr. Medvec and Julia Wojcik in traditional Polish costume

On Sunday, May 4, members of the PHS joined for our annual gathering
at the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa. Following the celebration
of Mass, members gathered for an awards luncheon during which Dr. Stephen Medvec,
Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, announced the winners of
this year’s competition: Magdalena Dziopko and Walter Wojcik.
Dr. Medvec commented that both students were deemed first prize winners
for “very well-written essays and virtually equal academic performance.”
Each student received a scholarship award of $1,000.
These funds come from the Scholarship Account and from a donation of
$1,000 made by Mrs. Debbie Majka in memory of her husband, Mr. Henry Majka,
long active in Polish-American affairs in Philadelphia, an executive with
Rohm & Haas, and a veteran of the United States Coast Guard.

About the scholarship winners:

Magdalena Dziopko recently graduated from Rowan University in Glassboro, NJ. Magdalena is the daughter of Polish parents who came to the United States in the 1980s. She received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish with minors in French and Political Science. Magdalena has also studied Elementary Chinese. She is active in volunteer work including Katrina Relief, Big Brother-Big Sister, Philadelphia AIDS Walk, and Engineers without Borders, among others. She studied in Chomberg, France in summer 2007, and would like to study in Poland. Magdalena hopes to become an interpreter.

Walter Wojcik is currently a junior at the Fox School of Business, Temple University, in Philadelphia. He is scheduled to receive his Bachelor of Business Administration Degree in May, 2010 (with majors in Accounting and Business Law). Walter is a business and university honors student. He is Treasurer and Temple Student Government Representative for Phi Alpha Delta, an international law fraternity. He also plays tenor and alto saxophone with his father in the Polish American String Band.
