Annual Chopin Concert

On Sunday, March 23, 2014 the 47th Annual Chopin Concert sponsored by the Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia took place at Holy Family University, Education & Technology Center, Philadelphia, PA with Magdalena Baczewska as the guest pianist. Magdalena Baczewska, recipient of outstanding achievement awards, is truly a talented pianist. She comes from a musical family and started playing the piano at the age of 5 in her native country of Poland.

Marie Hejnosz, President of the Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia welcomed everyone, and then turned the microphone over to Deborah Majka, concert chairperson and Honorary Consul of Poland for Southeastern Pennsylvania who introduced Magdalena Baczewska to the audience.

The theme of the program was, Chopin: Musical Inspirations and the Music He Inspired. During each selection Magdalena interacted with the audience explaining some background as to the following selections:

- Johann Sebastian Bach who was Chopin's musical hero. Sarabande from the French Suite No. 5
- Nocturnes by John Field - The Inventor of the Nocturne
- Friends and Rivals - Liszt (from Chants Polonais), Maiden's Wish, My Joys & Bacchanal
- Friendship with Adam Mickiewicz, a well known poet in Poland

After the intermission Magdalena focused on the National Style: Mazurka. Chopin was noted for his composition of mazurkas. The concert concluded with the New Generation: George Gershwin, Rhapsody in Blue.

Magdalena's style of playing draws the audience to the stage. The listener becomes part of the music that is being played with taste, purity of tone and inspiration. She is a true musical asset not just to our Polish community but the American community at large.
